The late 19th-century is a period of American history that is generally talked about topically rather than chronologically (4:00). The Civil War in the 1860’s resulted in greatness for America including the first federal income tax, the abolishment of slavery, and a newfound appreciated for what it’s like to be an American citizen (5:20). The wealthy slave owners of the South during this time period were worried that their properties would be taken away from (10:00).

                During Lincoln’s time, the Republican Party gave the United States its first activist state. There was 6 billion worth of bonds which was substantial for that time period (19:00). There was an abundance of jobs and agriculture started to boom (27:00). The Civil War was fought between the North and the South over the Western Territories. The Colorado Territory, Nevada Territory, and Dakota Territory were all organized in 1861 with Arizona and Idaho coming in two years later (31:00).

                A lot of the late 19th century is revolved around exploring the new Western Territories, some getting made into states, and using whatever resources were found there. The image of the American cowboy was made during this time (46:40). The importance of the railroad system has also increased. The issue America faced during this time was who was to government what. The late 19th century provided a lot of governmental challenges (47:00).
