A big issue with American politics in the current moment is the fact that Donald Trump is claiming that the election was rigged without sufficient evidence. Trump can get away with this sort of behavior as there is no punishment for lying in public unless you’re under court of law (3:30). The Trump administration puts out lawsuits and then withdraws them spreading the voter fraud narrative to followers across the nation (5:00).

There’s a large focus on Donald Trump in all of this, but what should not be forgotten is how dangerous this sort of propaganda is to American democracy. The reality of what is going on with the country has been blurred (9:40). This blur is furthering the divide between the left and the right with the right accusing the left of socialism and the left accusing the right of fascism (12:00).

During Lincoln’s time in the mid-19th century, the United States had a strong governmental institution in which most of the people believed in. The government provided money for education as well as for farmers to produce crops. The message of equality was high with the introduction of the 13th amendment. A new national currency was presented so people can pay into the federal government and have the government in their pocketbooks. The distrust and anonymity with what is real and false surrounding the institution of the United States poses a threat to the nation as a whole in 2020 (19:00).

During Andrew Johnson’s presidency, he feared backlash from southern whites, so he proposed a black vote would count as 1/5 of a person instead of 3/5 of a person. The rhetoric displayed here speaks volumes to the Republican Party and modern day white supremacy progressing backwards to appeal to a minority of vile individuals (31:00). Johnson claimed all of Lincoln’s ideas of equality protected by the law was socialism (37:50).

The idea of having government by the people and for the people has been called socialism by radicals since then. However, that type of government is true democracy and not a Marxist regime where the government has too much power (54:00).
